Reflection:

What worked well? Why?

During the first lesson we learned a lot about our students and what does and doesn’t work well for them. When creating this lesson plan we took our discoveries from the first lesson into consideration. We decided to break our lesson into sections to maintain engagement. After a brief introduction and demonstration, students began creating their tiles. After all the tiles were made we spent about 15-20 minutes outside collecting found objects. Once we were back inside we did the second texture demo and then they spent the next 20 minutes applying texture to their tiles. We immediately noticed how well this worked for our group. All students were participating and engaged from beginning to end.

What didn’t work well? Why?

We originally planned to use fired clay, but ended up having to use air dry clay again. This was due to bad planning. It would have been nice to introduce a different type of clay to the class so that they would have more experience.

What would you do differently?

During the last 10 minutes of class a couple students were free drawing with markers. This is something that we noticed that they enjoyed so, we included it after every lesson moving forward. They would express themselves through mark making and even writing. If we had a chance to do this again, I think it would be a great idea to introduce other drawing materials like colored pencils, oil pastels, or even charcoal.
